In the future, make a new post if you want to alert me of it; adding to your existing post does not create a post update notice ;)
How did you get all those apps if you don't have Store?
You are going to have to do one of two things, i think;
hack your N8 or re-flash it.

will do.

How did you get all those apps if you don't have Store?

I have nokia store installer.  it installs and automatically opens.  during the time it is open I can download other apps normally.  When I leave that page or close it, I have no shortcut left.  the result is that each time I want to run nokia store I have to find the installer app and open it.  I have no shortcut or nokia store app.

hack your N8 or re-flash it.

"hack or re-flash", it seems I am headed in that direction.

thanks again for your assistance.
My gut feeling is that a file is missing not allowing nokia store to load from web. perhaps I need a different nokia/ovi store installer.

If the offline installer didn't do it, there is definitely a bigger issue at hand.
Why so reluctant to hack?

By the way, hard-resetting is not a particularly savvy way to get back space on C:\.
Save hard resets for malfunctioning issues. There are several tutorials on the forum for getting back C:\ space without wiping the drive.

not necessarily afraid of hacking, I just haven't done my homework on it yet.
my concern would be possibly losing Ovi maps or bricking the phone.

funny you mention this.  The reason for the hard reset was that I was frustrated in removing Nat Geo .  I found the updated version and installed over the orig. and then removed it.  What happened was is that I had less space on C:?   this technique worked for others, but not for me.

Now having gone way past that issue on to this one.  knowing what you know of the state of my N8, would it be better to re-flash then hack due to possibility of missing files?  or would hacking allow me to go in and fix things bit by bit.

Lose?
You only gain by hacking, mate.
It is also uninstalled as easily as it was installed. No risk in the procedure.
Check out this post about it and ask any questions if you wish here, first.
The NatGeo app is easily(ish) removed after hacking and applying the Open4All+ patch, and many others can be "uninstalled" manually, too.
You have the attention of someone familiar with unscripted uninstallation here, bro ;)
And yeah, re-flash for sure.
