Remove your antivirus or disable them, and then install Phoenix as some of the files are removed by the antivirus when it's being installed.

Hi! I don`t understand section 9.
Must 1.DELETE mmc file, but what about 2.ADD part?
What I must ADD? Must the UDA file change to "BACKUP/REFURB"?
Thank You for good tutorial.

Thank You for good tutorial.

Just remove red file that shows up when you click the option button and there is no need to add anything just remove the file and click refurbish and follow the steps in pop up window you'll be able to flash.

Did you use Nokia Data Package Manager to download your firmwares?
or have you downloaded only some files and left the rest?
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Nokia dead phone USB flashing with Phoenix Service Software
Post by: vds5344 on May 09, 2012, 08:01:35 am
That means problem with your firmware files, make sure you downloaded all the needed files and then try again as phoenix is not able to find some required files thus throwing this error.

if you've installed any antivirus make sure you disable them while installling phoenix as it deletes some files while installing them.

are you downgrading your phone?
if "yes" then you just killed your phone..... :)
to make it alive again.... download Pr1.2 through navifirm
flash with that. n then flash with whichever you want to flash.

I'm kinda new in symbian flashing process, but I don't think that's the case, my phone os was Symbian Anna Ver 021.014, Date: 2011-05-26, and I tried to flash with 025.008. but again, I'm new here, so maybe there is something that I can't see.

please, if you have any suggestions, I'll be glade to try it out.

No need to worry, keep trying again. Btw which phoenix are u using, use 2011 if you're using 2012. Cause, i too had problem in 2012 and i was able to flash without any issues using 2011 version.

Ok, i think it might be the drivers problem. First remove the nokia suite and phoenix. Then install the latest nokia suite and now don't install phoenix. Connect your mobile to pc. Some drivers should be installed. After it is installed install phoenix 2011 and try flashing it should solve. GL.

I uninstalled all programs that had nokia as it's publisher, including nokia suite and phoenix, installed nokia suite first and connected my *dead* phone to computer, after auto installation of some drivers, I installed Phoenix-Service-Software-2011.14.004.45945, and followed steps in this tutorial. But still I got same error :(
Am I doing something wrong here?
In flashing process, I keep my usb cable disconnected from phone, but connected to pc, and meanwhile I have removed phone's battery, when pressing refurbish button, I click ok on displayed dialogue box and then connect usb to phone and insert battery back and press phone's power switch for a sec.

:/ try different ports or with a different pc. If the problem is still there i guess nokia store is only the place.

trying another USB port did the trick. tnx,
but at the end of process, there was some errors, but after restarting my phone, it's version has been changed to the version that I was trying to install. Honestly I don't know if it was a successful flashing, cause lock code hasn't changed to default '12345'.

Good, try again a dead flash it should fine. if not do a hard reset after the flashing is done and everything should be fine.

You can't unlock a phone by simply flashing...

Hi,

I have a dead Nokia C5-00 (RM-645) which I am trying to flash using Phoenix version and end up with this error:

The flashing failed. Do you want to retry the flashing?

HRESULT 0x8401f141 (-2080247487)

Flash: Boot rom was not detected after phone boot up. Unable to start flashing.

I am performing these steps from windows 7 64 bit virtual machine running under VMWare Fusion 5.0 in my Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion OS (10.8.2)

Is flashing from a VM supported?

You will need to run windows, the emulator prob doesn't support the drivers

Hello,

Yes again you are right! its the antivirus who blocked me from using Phoenix.

However i tried to flash my phone. but am getting  below error and tried more than 3 times always i get same error.

----------------
The flashing failed. Do you want to retry the flashing?

HRESULT 0x8401f141 (-2080247487)

Flash: Boot rom was not detected after phone boot up. Unable to start flashing.

As i mentioned in my post, My Nokia N8 is totally dead, when i connect charger the red light above usb cable doesn't light-up, maybe thats why its not able to boot rom ??

If anybody else facing similar issue please advice on how to proceed further.

Please help. I followed every step but as the flashing begins, I turn on the phone (Nokia E63), and as I click OK on the popup my PC gives me a Blue Screen of Death. Has anyone else experienced the same issue?

It might help to include as much information as possible when asking for specific help.
What are your operating environment variables (OS, software version [of Phoenix], do you have multiple versions installed on your computer, have you disabled ALL antivirus programs, etc.)?

Try another USB port. Phoenix likes the front auxiliary port on this computer. Good ol' USB5  :)

Try removing the battery (two torx screws on the side of the phone, a plastic tab and you can pull the battery out) and begin the dead flash with the battery out. When the dialog box comes on, insert the battery and click OK.

Did you make sure ALL anti-virus programs were off? The GUI program is not enough - you have to kill the engines, as well.

Hmm. I've never had any problems with my AV software, but I'll try to disable it and try again. Then I post the results.

Until i started manually killing running security software (MsMpEng.exe and Msseces.exe which make Microsoft Security Essentials) from the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del), i had all kinds of inconsistent and bug-filled flashing results. Seriously; weird results.
Now, the flashing is going much more smoothly (if only the mods would not brick the phone i would be set!)

Ok. I'll try to kill these ones too. But anyway, I did a test just killing the antivir. Here is what happened:
I stopped all antivirus software and processes and repeated the steps explained in this thread tutorial:
  -> Open Phoenix
  -> Connections: NO CONNECTION
-> Open product (in my case RM-159)
  -> Flashing -> Firmware Update
-> Select the product code for update (SW 35.0.002 Variant 001 Product Code:0546222)
-> Select Dead phone USB flashing
  -> Refurbish

Then I follow the on screen instructions and when I power on
the phone, Phoenix crash and exit.
But If I ignore that error message (not clicking Ok), Phoenix keeps
running, but the flashing fails with this error:

The flashing failed. Do you want to retry the flashing?

HRESULT 0x8401f141 (-2080247487)

Flash: Boot rom was not detected after phone boot up. Unable to start flashing.

And this is the output of Firmware Update:

Flashing started
Creating product data items list
Product data items list created
Backup not required
Flashing phone
Initializing
Scanning image files...
Waiting for USB device...
ERROR: Failed to set phone to flashmode

But If I leave the phone connected to PC, and open Phoenix again, then appears a connection to select, in my case, "USB3 - Product in flash mode". When I select that connection the status bar shows "Ready" and the icon on the left shows a connected status at USB3.

Then I do:

-> Open product (in my case RM-159)
  -> Flashing -> Firmware Update

It automatically selected my original product code, which is
SW 30.0.015 Variant 007 Product Code 0549028.

The "Dead phone USB flashing" is greyed out. I click on "Update Software" and get this error:

The flashing failed. Do you want to retry the flashing?

HRESULT 0x84210027 (-2078212057)

Firmware: Firmware updating failed. Error 0x8401227A - Flash: Phone reported that it does not allow to flash SW becasue it is older than existing.

And this is the Firmware Update output:

Then I choose a newer product code (SW 35.0.002 Variant 001 Product Code:0546222) and click on "Update Software" and get this error again:

Its the same thing if I click on "Refurbish". Its strange because its a newer software version. I'm using Phoenix v2014.04.003.47798.

Mate;
1. Use Software Reset instead of Refurbish
2. Do not turn on the phone. Instead, remove the battery and click Update Software and a dialog box will appear. At this point, insert the battery and click the Ok button to proceed
Maybe try also:
Disable automatic selection and manually select the FW you want to use
Uninstall your Phoenix and install 2012.50. S60 OS9x seems to like v2012.50.

There will be no giving up here, mate. what is the absolute path of the directory where you are placing your FW files? Where did you get your files and please list all the files you are using to flash.

I'm using a notebook with Windows 7. Phoenix is installed on :

C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix

All the FW files are on:

C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\rm-159

I'm no sure from where I got the FW files, because I was searching through many Symbian related sites and most of the links were dead. But the files which I downloaded installed without errors and no viruses. I downloaded a file named RM-159_LTA_35.0.002_v8.0_N95.exe and copied my original FW files (v 30.0.015) from Nokia Suite folder on my computer.
This is the list of the files on RM-159 folder. I'm not sure what files are used on the flash update, since Phoenix select them automatically based on my choice of FW version.

Mate, your file situation is a mess  ???
If those are exactly as they exist on your computer, you would have to rename them to their proper designations (delete the numbers after the files extensions).
You should have six files that more or less are named like these:
Rm-1XX_XX.X.XXX_Pr.c0r
Rm-1XX_XX.X.XXX_Pr.v24
Rm-1XX_XX.X.XXX_Xxx_U06_Uda.fpsx
Rm-1XX_xxxxxxx_XX.X.XXX_001.dcp
Rm-1XX_xxxxxxx_XX.X.XXX_001_Signature.bin
Rm-1XX_xxxxxxx_XX.X.XXX_001.vpl

You said you are in South America, right? What is the model number (RM) under your battery? If you are using a NAM phone (which is RM-160) you should be flashing the SW v35.2.1
You can get the RM-160 files here http://www.mrcrab.net/nokia/Nokia_N95.html?productType=RM-160&releaseID=2493588875&version=35.2.1
RM-159 is here http://www.mrcrab.net/nokia/Nokia_N95.html?productType=RM-159&releaseID=2646703126&version=35.0.2
i would try changing the file names if that is how they are on your computer, though.

Hello again,

Sorry about the delay to answer. I had tons of work to do with a tight deadline....
Anyway, I removed all the files from my note. Did a fresh install of Phoenix.
My phone is RM-159. I downloaded all the files for this model from the site you post the links and placed them on C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-159.
But now, when I click on "Firmware Update" I receive this message:
"Neither DP1.0 nor DP2.0 was found for the Product, or the Product cannot be identified."

Did you correct the file names? They have to be named like the download links except spaces have to be underscores (ie RM-159_35.0.002_pr.c0r). Also, all my flashing files are in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nokia\Packages\Products\Rm-159\

are you downgrading your phone?
if "yes" then you just killed your phone..... :)
to make it alive again.... download Pr1.2 through navifirm
flash with that. n then flash with whichever you want to flash.

HOW WILL I DOWNLOAD PR1.2 THROUGH NAVIFIRM?
WHAT DOES PR1.2 MEAN??

I have tried to downgrade my nokia 5130c-2 from v07.97 to v07.95 using phoenix.
It said that downgrade is not allowed, I forcibly continued but the process got
failed and my phone got bricked. Phone is totally dead, when i switch on i see

I have tried to downgrade my nokia 5130c-2 from v07.97 to v07.95 using phoenix.
It said that downgrade is not allowed, I forcibly continued but the process got
failed and my phone got bricked. Phone is totally dead, when i switch on i see
nothing, no light, no vibration.
...
I HAVE NO OTHER WAY TO TRY NOW AND GET MY PHONE ALIVE. PLS HELP ME ON THIS.
Mate, the Phoenix and JAF software specifically state downgrading will kill your phone.
Send it to Nokia.

Did you correct the file names? They have to be named like the download links except spaces have to be underscores (ie RM-159_35.0.002_pr.c0r). Also, all my flashing files are in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nokia\Packages\Products\Rm-159\

I believe the filenames are correct. Here is my filelist:

RM159_31.0.002_039_U01_uda.fpsx 49751623
RM159_0546222_35.0.002_001.dcp 15593
RM159_0546222_35.0.002_001.vpl 3690
RM159_0546222_35.0.002_001_signature.bin 797
RM-159_35.0.002_PR.C0R 73710930
RM-159_35.0.002_PR.v19 12656256

Maybe something else is missing. When I installed the installer package with the firmware I mentioned before, Phoenix did not complain about nothing, but cant flash my phone.
I tried to put those files on the folder you said, but the result is the same.

are you downgrading your phone?
if "yes" then you just killed your phone..... :)
to make it alive again.... download Pr1.2 through navifirm
flash with that. n then flash with whichever you want to flash.

HOW WILL I DOWNLOAD PR1.2 THROUGH NAVIFIRM?
WHAT DOES PR1.2 MEAN??

No, I did not tried to downgrade my phone. I tried to reinstall its software using Nokia Suite, and the process stopped and my phone went dead. It only shows the word Nokia when I turn it on.
Now I'm trying to recover my phone using this tutorial and I'm using a newer firmware for my model.

The numbers are the filesizes, so it can help you identify if I got the wrong files, but I don't think so.
My file structure are the same as pointed in your link. Still got the same error message.

Thanks.
1. Pull your battery and hold the power button for about 15 seconds
 2. Open Phoenix and select File>Open Product
 3. Select RM-495
 4. Leave Connections: as NO CONNECTION
 5. Select Flashing>Firmware Update
 6. Select your product code and choose the NEWEST firmware
 7. Check Dead phone USB flashing
 8. Press the SW Reset button
 9. When prompted, connect your USB cable to the phone and insert the battery
10. Press OK

At this point, Phoenix should do the job.
If not, then you need the tool that connects directly to your phone via the contacts underneath the battery.
There may be other centers to get the phone flashed using the tool than just by Nokia. Try asking at mobile retailers to see if they service phones.

Okay.
Try installing Nokia Care Suite, if you do not already have it : http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=227052&t=4&i=1
Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nokia\Nokia Suite\NOSSU2\variants\Production External\Products\
Is there a folder rm-159 there?
If so, move this rm-159 folder to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nokia\Packages\Products\ and delete the one in the Phoenix directory
If not, move your rm-159 folder to that location
We want only one instance of firmware, basically
Then try Phoenix again

Well, I guess that Windows 7 puts things in different folders. My file structure is different from what you have told me. Anyway, I found the correct folder and Nokia Care does not have a RM-159 folder, but I move my folder to C:\Program Data\Nokia\Packages\Products, and then Phoenix did find my firmware.
But still no success to flash my phone. This time I got this error:
Quote
The flashing failed. Do you want to retry the flashing?

HRESULT 0x8401f141 (-2080247487)

Anyway, no luck with the sequence you told too. Phoenix crashes when I press power on phone. Yesterday, the process failed, but Phoenix did not crashed.

Please try this and see if the computer installs its drivers correctly...

I uninstalled all Nokia software and installed again. I put the battery into the phone and connect it to PC. With the phone off, nothing happens. When I turn on the phone (it goes to the white screen with Nokia written on it), then Windows installs the drivers without any problems.
The drivers installed are Nokia BB5 ADL Loader USB Phone Parent and Nokia BB5 ADL Loader USB Generic.

Title: Re: [Tutorial] Nokia dead phone USB flashing with Phoenix Service Software

Dead flashing issues different commands to the phone.
If the phone is on, a different process is used to initialize the flashing procedure. In a dead flash, you are able to flash firmware that the phone would not otherwise accept by bypassing authorizations.
i hate to be the bearer of unpleasant news, but your error messages are indicative of you making a mistake somewhere; either in technique or file placement, availability or nomination.
Double, triple, quadruple and quintuple-check EVERY single file. Compare all screenshots for clues as to Win7-specific procedure and read the entire thread of all Phoenix tutorial posts to find out where you are going wrong.
Basically, start from square one and forget what you think you already know. You have already indicated you have misread and done it your own way, mate. Phoenix glitches a bit sometimes, but if you follow proper protocol, it will flash the phone.

Well, I'll try again but I really don't know where this mistake could be. The firmware files and the flashing instructions are the ones you posted. In my previous post I followed your instructions step by step. If I have any different result I'll post it...  :(
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Nokia dead phone USB flashing with Phoenix Service Software
Post by: matthew on October 17, 2013, 09:39:00 pm
My instructions are only the flash; there is more to it than that. The error messages you are getting are related to issues with your files for flashing. You have to make certain you have all the right files in the right place and no other sets of files floating around on your computer. If there are incomplete sets or broken files, Phoenix will not be happy.
Find a few tutorials for Phoenix (there are many) and study them for clues; maybe you are missing something reeeeally simple or maybe you are missing just one important step.
i have run into the same errors you have in my experience, so i know that they are from making an error, not because Phoenix or the phone are broken.

After verifying all files and that there is only one set; here is a note for your preparation: when changing versions of Phoenix, the way my flashing cable drivers get installed is this (and please note that i am only giving the required steps one by one - no jumping ahead or assuming):
1. Open Phoenix
2. File menu > Open Product
3. Flashing menu > Firmware Update
4. Product Code menu > ... (select product code)
5. Remove battery from your phone and hold power for a few seconds, then connect the USB (and never use the main USB port) and insert the battery.
Now Windows should install the flashing cable drivers for your phone.
6. Let it finish (the icon in the system tray indicating new hardware will go away) and close Phoenix and disconnect your phone.
7. Open Phoenix and repeat the previous steps (with the battery out of phone and the phone is not to be connected) for the dead flash.
8. Go through with the flash (and i think Refurbish would not be a bad call on this one) and connect the USB cable then insert the battery (and do NO MORE than that) when prompted by Phoenix. DO NOT press anything on the phone.
9. Phoenix should be prepping the flash...
10. Click OK and hold your breath  ;)

Hi,

I uninstalled everything and installed Phoenix again. I found no issues on the Internet regarding Phoenix installation under Windows 7. It installed without any problems.
Then I started following your instructions and step 5 did not work. Like I said before when you asked about my drivers, they only install when I power on the phone. Doing as you instructed on step 5 nothing happens. I waited for some time, but Windows does not detect anything.
What's next? (if there is a next step...)
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Nokia dead phone USB flashing with Phoenix Service Software
Post by: matthew on October 25, 2013, 11:22:12 am
Now, you call in the big dog: Nokia Care.
There is no reason it should not work if you are doing it as prescribed.
The deadest of dead phones take that flash (even the E6 after two rounds of N8 firmware still accepted this flash).
A bricked E72 has taken it a number of times as well, so i know v3 phones accept a dead flash.
Mate, i am sorry, but if this is not working you have no option but to hand it to Nokia for the flash. Their software broke your phone so they should be obliged to repair it.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Nokia dead phone USB flashing with Phoenix Service Software

Like I said, my phone is not on warranty anymore, so I guess they will not feel any obligation to repair it.
And my Windows can detect my phone and install the drivers, but I have to turn the phone on. Should it not be worth the try to follow your instructions, but then turn on the phone on step 5?
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Nokia dead phone USB flashing with Phoenix Service Software

That is what you have to ask them to find out. If you just assume they will not and do not ask, they will never do it, right?
You have already tried it that way and reported it was not working.
i told you i would give it a go, but you are not willing to take me up on that and i am not able to do more than tell you the procedure otherwise.
One last try at help, though. Try deleting your files and use Phoenix to download them:
Tools > Data Package Download
Enter your product code and let Phoenix find you a set of files to flash.

That option is non existent in my Phoenix. Then I tried to install another version and there isn't that option either. My Phoenix is version 2012.50.001.49220

Hi,

my phone is a nokia 701 dtv (RM-774). When I bought it had the product code 059M727 and software version 111.020.0307. I changed the PC to 059G9T4 and updated for belle 113.010.1506.

Last week I downloaded OFW via nokia care suite and I tried downgrade the system. Obviously, I bricked the phone :P

I followed steps to flash dead phones and tried Phoenix SW reset with OFW (RM-774 111.020.0307), but always get the message:

" The flashing failed. Do you want to retry the flashing?
HRESULT 0x8401f141 (-2080247487)
Flash: Boot rom was not detected after phone boot up. Unable to start flashing. "

The phone will not turn on and when I hold power button only performs one vibration.

In a post I read: "are you downgrading your phone? if "yes" then you just killed your phone..... to make it alive again download Pr1.2 through navifirm flash with that. n then flash with whichever you want to flash."
What this mean?
What the right steps to revive the phone?

Tks!

As far as i know, there is no known stable method to downgrade the Belle devices from the FP software versions. You can flash the newest firmware (no need to change your product code) using Dead phone USB flashing > Refurbish to get it back.

Hi matthew

Problem is that the last version to my phone model is 111.020.0307 (RM-774) and I had installed 113.010.1506. It's possible refurbish in this case?

Refurbish using the latest firmware.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Nokia dead phone USB flashing with Phoenix Service Software

I repeat steps...
- open Phoenix as administrator
- select "no connection"
- file > open product > RM-774
- flashing > firmware update > ... > product code 059M727 (SW version 111.020.0307 / variant 002)
- check "dead phone usb flashing"
- click "refurbish"

Output show: "Waiting for usb device..."

Meanwhile open a box...
----------
Follow these instructions:
1. disconnect usb cable
2. press and hold power button (at least 8 seconds)
3. connect usb cable
4. press ok
----------

In step 2 the phone only performs one vibration. I think it's strange, because I read in another post that three vibration are expected.

Nothing happens and some time later get the message:
----------
The flashing failed. Do you want to retry the flashing?
HRESULT 0x8401f141 (-2080247487)
Flash: Boot rom was not detected after phone boot up. Unable to start flashing.
----------

No, no the latest software is the 030 software. You can not downgrade your device software, bro.

Also, don't press anything on the phone until you connect the USB cable. Then, press the power only if it does not proceed on its own and only until it vibrates once and then let it go.

I downoad RM-774 113.010.1506 059G9T4: _lta_light_silver and tried refurbish, but the message keeps poping up:

" The flashing failed. Do you want to retry the flashing?

Can you describe your exact process?
Also, do you have only one set of firmware in your rm-774 folder?

And you might try using a different USB port, too.

Also, do you have only one set of firmware in your rm-774 folder?

In rm-774 folder I have files:
RM-774_113.010.1506_23.01_LTA_and_Brazil_79u_prd.rofs2.fpsx
RM-774_113.010.1506_79u_prd.core.fpsx
RM-774_113.010.1506_C00.01_79u_prd.rofs3.fpsx
RM-774_113.010.1506_U15.01_79u.uda.fpsx
RM774_059K0X1_113.010.1506_037.dcp
RM774_059K0X1_113.010.1506_037.vpl
RM774_059K0X1_113.010.1506_037_signature.bin

I removed all nokia programs (latest nokia suite and phoenix 2012.50.000.49146) and drivers (nokia flashing cable driver, nokia connectivity cable driver, pc connectivity solution) and reinstall them.

When I open phoenix no usb device are detected (in connections show only NO CONNECTION option)

Then I chose:
- file > open product > RM-774
- flashing > firmware update > ... > product code 059K0X1 (SW version 113.010.1506 / variant 037)
- check "dead phone usb flashing"
- click "refurbish"

When the box open I do:
- disconnect usb cable and remove battery
- connect usb cable
- insert battery
- hold power button until a phone vibration (about 1 sec)
- release power button and press "OK"

Output show: "Waiting for usb device..." and then got message:
" The flashing failed. Do you want to retry the flashing?
HRESULT 0x8401f141 (-2080247487)
Flash: Boot rom was not detected after phone boot up. Unable to start flashing. "

Try this intead:
Phone USB is connected, battery is out.
Begin flash with Refurbish and when that dialog with the 'Remove USB cable...' opens, insert your battery and click 'Ok'

I tested too with rm-774 059G9T4 (113.010.1506_039) that is OS I had when I changed the product code.

And configured like below (remove red marked item)

But I think that firmware is not problem. I believe that I'm doing wrong the step "disconnect usb/battery and connect it again".

The battery should be fully charged?
Its normal in connections show only NO CONNECTION option?

Yesterday I had hope!
I removed all nokia references (programs and drivers) and antivirus. Then I cleaned  pc with ccleaner.
After that, I installed only phoenix.

First I tried the "SW reset" option. I connected charger, usb cable and battery. Phoenix froze with output message "Scanning image files..."
Then I tried the "Refurbish" option. Did same steps, but this time Windows detected the device and installed the driver automatically. Unfortunately flash failed.

The good news is that Windows sounds when I plug the phone. This did not happen before.
The bad news is that "Boot rom was not detected after phone boot up. Unable to start flashing" message persists.

Good news!!
After several attempts it finally worked!

Here the steps:
1. I used my brother's 701 to fully charge the battery (that was almost drained)
2. I disconnected cables and removed battery
3. Open phoenix > file > open product > RM-774
4. Flashing > firmware update > ... > product code 059G9T4 (SW version 113.010.1506)
5. Check "dead phone usb flashing"
6. Click "refurbish"
7. When dialog box opens request to remove usb cable and battery and insert again I do:
--------------------------------------------------------
a. CONNECT CHARGER (very important because without it wasn't working)
b. connect usb cable
c. insert battery
d. press "OK"
--------------------------------------------------------
Than everything went as expected...
The steps 1 and 7a were very important to achieve the goal.

Tks @matthew for the help!
Now my 701 came back to life!

That really isn't enough of the error message and you could explain a little more what exactly you did, what phone...
Ignore the dialogue. Start the flash without your phone connected. When the dialogue with instructions opens, insert your USB to the PC and phone, then click OK and do nothing more.

i said do not switch on the phone; just connect it to the PC with the USB and click Ok when the dialogue box that gives instructions appears.
But, as i mentioned, this is an S60 procedure so i do not know if it will work for S40 in the same way.

The procedure:
1. File > Open Product > RM-578
2. Flashing > Firmware Update
3. ... > Your Product Code
4. X Dead phone USB flashing
5. Refurbish
6. Dialogue box opens > Connect the (turned off) phone to PC
7. OK

That's it. Do no more and no less.

You aren't to touch the phone at all.
If you aren't getting this dialogue, why don't you post screenshots of what you see on your screen:
Press PrintScr (which is to the right of F12) then open an image editing program and Edit > Paste.
If you post an image, it is more helpful.
