It would be so cool to use the phone without touching it. Sony just introduced floating touch tech. on the Xperia Sola but can we use the front facing camera to control the UI without actually touching it and just moving the hands in the air!?
I'm not saying about a touchscreen tech. but the tech used in kinect which is certainly better than floating touch and it just uses the front cam.
What is Kinect?
Kinect is a motion sensing input device by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game console and Windows PCs. Based around a webcam-style add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, it enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller, through a natural user interface using gestures and spoken commands.

So can we use the webcam of our Nokia devices in a similar way?

it's an all different touch screen. There's a different in mutual and self inductance you know :)

mutual and self induction??
:O :O
it is in class 12th physics syllabus. 8)

yeah Also if this touchless gesture is applied then we won't be apply multi touch.

you are right.
and it won't be that acuurate :/

front facing camera is placed on the top right corner.
i am not sure if it will detect the movements

there is a difference in techniques used. This one seems exciting because it can detect 20 mm touches but it's not too cool for practical uses. I imagine phone getting mad and sensing things of environment or Maybe no fun to able to use pinch to zoom. This is just infancy of this technique.

You missunderstood the topic!
Kinect is not a touchscreen tech., it recognises the gestures using the camera.
I'm just talking about gestures in the air, near and far in order to control the UI.
For example: I'm standing 10 feet away from my phone but the front camera is facing me. In order to change the song I'll wave my hand towards left to go back to previous song, towards right to go to next song, towards up to increase the volume, downwards to decrease the volume etc.

xperia sola is same what i described as far as i know.

It's not a touchscreen tech.!
It is used with XBox 360 to control games without controllers.

oh sorry dude i though about sola. Also experiments related to front cam have made up facelock but a problem is the resolution and way of interpretation but I'm pretty sure we might see this technology on phones

Yup!
And kinect like tech. dosen't need a high res cam. It just has to detect our arm movements. The only problem is interpretation. I'm not a software type of guy, so I can't do it...but someone else can.
:D
