Title: Getting Belle Refresh on an N8?
Post by: LupusIrae on May 29, 2013, 01:29:58 am
First off, I'm new, so if this isn't in the right place I'm sorry, Mod, please move it.

The title says it all. Bought it unbranded a while back, and I can't get Belle refresh OTA, via Nokia Suite, Nokia Care Suite, Navifirm, or even find it. If someone could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.
Here's some information about the phone.

Software version
111.030.0609
Custom Version
111.030.0609.269.01
Product Code
059C8T6
RM-596

If there is more information I can give you to help me, I can post it here.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Anyone have any useful information?

You are going to have to flash a EURO FW if you want Refresh on that phone, mate.
Nokia never launched Refresh in the West.
Resources for locating a set of the EURO files are:
NaviFirm 2.x via NokiaCooker 3.4 http://www.symbian-toys.com/nokiacooker.aspx
Mr. Crab http://www.mrcrab.net/nokia/Nokia_N8.html?productID=2586738027&productType=RM-596&releaseID=7087503031&version=111.40.1511 BUT you will have to rename the files correctly after downloading them (eg 38C572D4_RM609_059J226_111.140.0058_006_signature.bin would be renamed RM609_059J226_111.140.0058_006_signature.bin)
A cracked version of Phoenix 2012.50 or Nokia Data Package Manager with this implemented http://forum.dailymobile.net/index.php?topic=94403.0 BUT this way requires knowing a specific product code already. This option is the one i go with. Although it is a hassle to find a product code, this way allows resumed downloads, automatic file grouping with EMMC.fpsx optional and it is direct from Nokia.

Edit:
Mr. Crab is direct from Nokia (http://nds2.fds-fire.nokia.com/p/d/fds_fire/). Easiest way to go, for sure.

not sure if I should continue on this thread or not?

but I downloaded the 059C5Q7 via Phoenix and attempted the flash.  Got an error message.

"FUR:ALGO reported error in control frame, unable to continue.
ERROR: Programming error reported for asic CMT
--Error Type     0x02
--Error Specifier 0x12
--Offending Addr  0xFFFFFFFF
--Expected Content 0x0000FFFF
--Detected Content 0xFFFFFFFF
User Data area erasing failed
Unable to flash phone 0x8401F173
Starting to recover the phone"

any ideas on this.

Try it using Dead phone USB flashing > Refurbish
The easiest procedure for this is to remove your battery.
The two T5 Torx screws on the sides can be backed out and then pull the plastic end piece out of the phone. The black plastic tab holding the battery is opened from the bottom left (camera facing you) and the battery slides out by grabbing the sticker attached to it.
When you begin the flash and the dialog box appears, slide the battery back in and press OK.

i would also recommend (if you did not do this) that you download the emmc.fpsx content, too. The N8 has a lot of bundled software in the Mass Memory worth the download.

thanks for the help.  I will check for the file you mentioned.  I am not sure if I can get this done today, but I will reply later with a followup.
thanks again.
update:
got it done with a straight up regular flash with newly downloaded files., though now having problem with mail server, I need a pop3 and after the refresh I see no option as before the upgrade.  I will search around the forum for a solution.
thanks for the help

You can manually convert to POP3 in active mailboxes.
Just go to Settings > Mailbox name > Mailbox settings > Advanced mailbox settings and you can convert the mailbox from IMAP to POP3.
No, this is not convenient, but i am not yet aware of a more direct technique   :-[

Oops, i forgot!
When you get to the accept/decline option, DECLINE Nokia's terms and manually configure your new mailbox immediately.
i have not used POP3 in quite some time =oP

its fixed,  I had never put in the sim and after doing so allowed normal email accounts!
I would not of thought of that.

btw is their a way to dump "public transport or guides" to free up space on C:  ?
this may be addressed on other threads.

thanks for all of the help!!!

Did you try uninstalling them?
i would recommend uninstalling Microsoft Office. Nokia Suite will download it (if you have enabled automatic download of software) and there will be an option for installation on E:\ found in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nokia\Nokia Suite\NOSSU2\applications\MicrosoftApps.2.1.5616.e.sis
Use that to save 40MB on C:\
You can also do a lot to free up space after hacking your phone. If you do this, you can free up quite a bit of space.
1. Hack your device (http://sdf.allstarsoftware.co.uk/symbian3-modding/(tutorial)hack-symbian-without-flashing-n8-c7-c6-01-500-x7-e6/)
2. Delete your FOTA cache (http://sdf.allstarsoftware.co.uk/symbian3-modding/(tutorial)remove-fota-file-'reserved'-in-cprivate102072c4-permanently/)
3. Use apps to clean up unnecessary components (http://symbian-developers.net/how-to-clean-up-space-on-your-phone/)
4. If you feel brave, you can delete unneeded language resources (http://sdf.allstarsoftware.co.uk/general-symbian-discussion/reclaim-space-on-c-(or-mass-memory)/)

Here is the Microsoft Apps to E:\ installer (http://www.4shared.com/mobile/6p6aFm9l/MicrosoftAppsE.html) and another unavailable and unheralded update of significance: WLAN drivers by Nokia Beta Labs (http://sdf.allstarsoftware.co.uk/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=5820;attach=15030).
