Title: Has Foursquare for Symbian stopped working properly?
Post by: KimEE on January 31, 2014, 12:15:03 pm
Since this morning (my timezone is Eastern European Time Zone (UTC+02:00)), all Foursquare checkins using 4sq version 2.0.985 return as "empty", with the "Aw shucks! No points for this check-in".

Closing and re-opening the application does not change anything, nor does shutting the power off an on (rebooting) on my Nokia 808 help.

Has anyone else noticed this (if you use Foursquare) and do you have any suggestions for what I should do if I would like to continue using this app?

Sound like another social network changes its API again. There is nothing you can do about it.All you can do is inform the developers about the issue so the developers can update the app.

Alright. If that is the case, I assume using Foursquare for the Symbian platform effectively ended there.
As it is one of the most popular location-based social networking websites for mobile devices, with focus on Android and iPhone, I doubt they will make any upgrade for the Symbian platform.

You should try contact the developer first and inform them the problem. It is not hard to update new version with latest API.Just probably there won't be any new feature.

I sent a message to Foursquare support. The reply was:

"Currently we are no longer supporting Foursquare on Symbian devices. Our apologies for any inconvenience here."

"Currently" (=at the moment) vs. "no longer" (=is not possible anymore). Strange word combination.

Put this into another situation:

...

A patient wakes up after an operation. An operation that required anesthesia, but it was not an operation that should have caused any noticeable change in the torso itself.

- Doctor! Doctor! Where is my right arm? I can't feel it! "Yes", the doctor says. "We have sawed your right arm off. Currently you are no longer able to use it. Our apologies for any inconvenience here."
- What? Currently? You, you... you are going to put it back in place later on?

Maybe the person who replied does not know English very well.

Amusing analogy ;)

For reasons absolutely unknown to me, the app started working..somewhat..all of a sudden some days ago. Somewhat means that not all functions are working properly, but the main function, logging in, does.

I have no idea why it started to work alll of a sudden (though I am glad about it); I do not believe they reversed the API (?) or anything.

It's a mystery, really.

Actually i already emailed them before and they say they no longer suppported.Read also post on top.I guess the reason they still push update is due to large amount of email and bad review in nokia store they got on this issue.I think they didn't expect there still a lot of foursquare symbian users.  ;D  ;D  ;D

Yes, I got an update, from Nokia Store, that has officially been frozen for almost two months now. The fact that Nokia Store still has Symbian updates is really a wonder.

However, the update itself did nothing to my phone.

With this I mean that yes, the checkins do work, but it is still in the "works somehow"-mode. And my update still says "Version 2.0.985" (which is the update from January 2013) even though the update in Nokia Store says the update of today is v2.0.1016.

Does your app show any difference from the earlier version?

Saw on another forum that the same issue has been noticed also there. The Nokia Store says it is v 2.0.1016, but on the program itself it says 2.0.985.

Wonder what they have updated there?

As I did not understand what kind of update it is, when v2.0.985 updates to "v2.0.1016" but is still v2.0.985 so I asked Foursquare today about it.

What did they reply?

This had nothing to do with foursquare. This nokia store problem.

How does it work when one submits/has submitted an app or an update to an app to the Nokia Store? Is it the uploader himself who updates directly or does it go thru someone at Nokia who first checks the update and then approves it?

Just thinking, if it is someone at Foursquare who has mistakenly (re)uploaded an old app (v2.0.985) as opposed to uploading the new version (v2.0.1016) or is it someone @ Nokia who has made the mistake here.

Nokia check it every time.

This morning I checked my Nokia-account. There was (again) information about an update which was Foursquare v2.0.1016. I thought issues pertaining to the Feb 18th 2014 update had been resolved but no, after the update (today) the version on my Nokia is still 2.0.985.

Nokia store seems to be able to "sniff" that the version on my Nokia is an older one than the version that the store tries to push for download, but the actual update just somehow does not go through.

How much of this has to do with the Nokia Store freezing the Symbian updates on Jan 1st?

In any case, if there is an update, which is approved by Nokia, then Nokia should also be responsible for that update to work, assuming that it worked when the publisher (in this case Foursquare) uploaded it to the store.

As an another note, there has to be some kind of a special arrangement in this update in any case, since I'd say that there is no way the update had waited for one and a half month for an approval so I'd say that Foursquare (or their representative?) has sent it for approval after Jan 1st, 2014.

Is there anyone that knows anyone @ Nokia (Store) that can be asked -and even more, TO DO something- about this (and to do something does not mean deleting/removing the update)?

edit: typos and such

I made a query to the finnish Nokia Support earlier today. The reply that I got now from Nokia (in Finnish, the next is my translation) is that "it is apparent that the update is not compatible somehow. We'll take a look"

You emailed them, do they usually reply to emails? Since no-one has done squat for that faulty release. I have tried to search for an appropriate email to send them a request for an update, since this one is not working.

foursquare is one social network full of bugs... it always stalls....   all 4sq apps face the same issue.... some days they don't all work

Somebody somewhere has obviously done something, as the update now really works. So, when the store app suggests an update for Foursquare, it really does update to version 2.0.1016 as the update promises.

Edit: and yes, the "explore" tab now works.
