Enhancing default framerate of the Nokia C5-03?
« on: July 05, 2014, 07:45:06 pm »
Hi there!

I do have a Nokia C5-03 and I'm quite satisfied with it - besides the fact, that it can only play videos with 15 fps although it can display 360x640.

So I hacked my phone so far.

Does anyone know, if there does already exist a patch (for a hacked C5-03) or at least a tutorial that explains how to change the given famerate from 15 to 30 so that it is possible to watch 360x640 videos smoothly?

That would be a great help!

Greetings!

You can change it with this file : z:/private/10202be9/10283344.txt

Or download Tweaks App with the ui acceleration plugin, it will drain your battery much quicker though.

And well it depends on the video codec ect, you have a rather old phone so it wouldn't really be able to play very big files.

Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate it! Really!  :)

I'll try those suggestions out.

You said: "You can change it with this file : z:/private/10202be9/10283344.txt"

WHAT exactly i need to change in this file? Sorry if that question sounds stupid, but I'm really a beginner in modding symbian.

Draining battery is not such a problem as I intend to watch wideos with plug.

Unfortunately, even increasing the system's framerate won't allow higher fps in video. The default framerate of the E72 is 22, which i have increased to 30, but the video is maxed at a software level at 15fps.
The best you can do is find a video player with better codecs or use software to convert the video to 360x640 @15fps =o/
(The string in the CenRep key 0x10283344 for the framerate is 0x0)

Hi matthew! Thanks for your comment.

You wrote:

"Unfortunately, even increasing the system's framerate won't allow higher fps in video. The default framerate of the E72 is 22, which i have increased to 30, but the video is maxed at a software level at 15fps."

I'm not sure if i understand. If i do increase the systems framerate it still won't play 360x640 videos smoothly?

you wrote: "the video is maxed at a software level at 15 fps."

Do you mean a video that is created by the nokia video recorder (in this case i don't mind) or also a (movie) video, that i would convert (360x640) and copy to my phone for watching?

My intention is to play 360x640 (movie)video on my C5-03 smoothly; i would convert it with the "Free Video to Nokia Phones Converter".

You wrote further: "The best you can do is find a video player with better codecs or use software to convert the video to 360x640 @15fps =o/"

I tried to convert a movievideo to 360x640 / 15 fps, but that did not run smoothly (even not on VLC media Player on the computer) - that was not satisfying for me.

"(The string in the CenRep key 0x10283344 for the framerate is 0x0) "

Unfortunately i do not understand this sentence.

Greetings

Not unless the media player can play video at a higher framerate; the native Nokia media player can only play video at 15fps, so increasing the system framerate is not going to help. If i play a 30fps video on the E72, it plays terribly. The thing to do is find a better media player than the native one.

There is a converter built into Nokia PC Suite (not Nokia Suite) that i have used to convert video for use on the E72, and the RealPlayer converter is also a free solution that works very well when configured appropriately for your device's capabilities (i have converted 720p @30fps to play smoothly on the E72 (240p @20fps) so it really depends on making sure your configuration works.

If you have hacked your phone, use a 3rd-party file manager (like X-plore) with the Open4All RP+ patch enabled in ROMPatcher+ and all files visible enabled in the file manager app and open the file Z:\Private\10202be9\10283344.txt. It will look approximately like this:
Code: [Select]
cenrep
version 1
[owner]
0x10282845
[defaultmeta]
 0
[platsec]
 cap_rd=alwayspass
[Main]
0x0 int 22 0 cap_rd=alwayspass cap_wr=alwaysfail
0x1 int 75 0 cap_rd=alwayspass cap_wr=alwaysfail
0x2 int 1 0 cap_rd=alwayspass cap_wr=alwaysfail
0x3 int 1000 0 cap_rd=alwayspass cap_wr=alwaysfail
0x4 int 7 16777216 cap_rd=alwayspass cap_wr=WriteDeviceData
0x5 int 0 0 cap_rd=alwayspass cap_wr=alwaysfail
String 0x0 (0x0 int 22 0 cap_rd=alwayspass cap_wr=alwaysfail) has the system default framerate.

Hi matthew!

Thanks for your patience and detailed reply! Now I understand things much better.

I do understand. So it's not possible to change the specs of the native media player as well as the systems framerate?

It's odd, as the predecessor of the C5-03, the 5800, CAN play 360x640 videos smoothly as well as the downgraded(!) successor, the C5-06. (At least those nokia models are listed in the 360x640 section in the "Free Video to Nokia Phones Converter").

Any suggestions for a 3rd Party Video Player for Symbian S60 v5?

Well, you can try LCG's SmartMovie. Generally, LCG = quality and it's freeware so there is no loss to try it ;)

Thanks for the advice, but WHAT do I have to change exactly? I can view this file with X-Plore, but I can't EDIT it so far (besides that I don't know what to change ...).

I used "HelloOX2" to hack my phone, and after the procedure I was told: "Everything Done! Enjoy your Hacked phone!" - so I assume, my phone is hacked!? Or not?

How to edit those .txt-files?

(I hope I do not stress your nerves or bore you to excess - as I am really a newbe at modding symbian. I'm doing babysteps here ...)

Greetings!

Sorry, which firmware version are you running ? HelloOX2 is one hell of an old tool.

Matthew said above what to change, "String 0x0 (0x0 int 22 0 cap_rd=alwayspass cap_wr=alwaysfail) has the system default framerate. "

What you do is copy that file to c:/private/10202be9/ change the value 22 to something higher, 30 for example. then restart your device, you cannot edit files directly on z:/ since it is the ROM (read only memory)

Just remember to set the file attributes after you copy it from Z:\ - remove the 'Read only' x so you can modify the file.

Sorry, which firmware version are you running ? HelloOX2 is one hell of an old tool.

The firmware of my Nokia C5-03 is:

OS: S60 V5 (of course)

Softwareversion: V 23.0.015

Special Version: 23.0.015.C01.01
(in German it's called "Sonderversion", so I assume in english it's something like "Special Version" or "Extended Version" (?))

Type: RM-697

HelloOX2 is one hell of an old tool? Yikes, in the (german) forum it was recommendet as the best that hobby programmer were capable of to hack symbian ... If there are better (and more efficient) ways to hack symbian, please let me know!

Matthew said above what to change, "String 0x0 (0x0 int 22 0 cap_rd=alwayspass cap_wr=alwaysfail) has the system default framerate. "

Thanks! Now I REALLY know what to do, wasn't clear enough for me before! So the (edited) file stays in C: and is not copied back to Z:?

So to me the symbian basic structure is located in Z: (readible only) and every new adjustment (e.g. by an software update - or hacking  ;) ) is placed as an file in C:. That's interesting an gives me a far better understanding.

We all started out noobs, all part of the job ;)

I can tell ...  ;D

(Can somebody tell me why i still mess around with an old symbian phone instead of just grab an new android phone ...? :D Well .. I like this little device, although it's old. It's still smart! [And it was a gift ...  8) ])

HelloOX2 is one hell of an old tool.

But well, I seems to work so far ... I copied the above recommended file Z:\Private\10202be9\10283344.txt from Z: to C: and could also edit it.  :)

The 640x360 Video still does not run smooth with the native RealPlayer, but as matthew said:

Quote

The best you can do is find a video player with better codecs or use software to convert the video to 360x640 @15fps =o/

So there does not seem to exist a file that can change the RealPlayers framerate as well like it's possible with the systems framerate ...?

(I really apologize for my humble babysteps ...  :-[ )

What else is a higher sytems framerate good for besides better video performance...? (which turned out useless as the RealPlayer Software does not support the higher systems framerate ... ??? )

Jesus ... my brain gets overheated ... :O
