Hi!
I don't know what I did. But I got a used Nokia 700 in January. It was cluttered and I cleaned it to the point when I managed to have 130 MB on C:/. That was about two months ago. And I was happy and calm.
But now it is down to about 45 MB. All I did was install quite a few apps on F:/ (I have 64 GB on that miniSD-card) and film videos, which are also stored on F:/.
Then, on the first of May, I noticed these files: C:/private/10281E17/[102830AB]thumbnail_v4.db (5.5 MB) and C:/private/10281E17/[102830AB]thumbnail_v4.db-wal (a whopping 32.8 MB). I'm don't exactly know, what they are. But I sure cannot erase them AT ALL. I tried everything that I could think of. I know they would recreate themselves anyway, since they have something to do with "gallery". Maybe they would turn out much smaller, though, since I have no photos nor videos on C:/. Those exact two filenames can also be found on F:/. And with 6 MB and 87.6 MB they are even bigger. (They are 0.7 MB and 13.4 on E:/.) But there I couldn't care less. Why are they so big in C:/?
Therefore it's on C:/ that I want to get rid of them.
Can someone help me please?

PS: I cleared my browser cache, just in case. But that didn't help...

As long as you have images on your phone, the system is going to cache thumbnails (just like on your PC).
You could stop the related processes in order to delete the files, but they would only be recreated so that would be pointless.
There is a blog post about getting space on C:\ back and there is a post here in the forum about deleting unnecessary language files (your phone has to be hacked).

I tried to kill the related processes. And then delete the cache-files. I think their recreation might turn out to be smaller than nearly 40 MB on C:/. But I obviously didn't kill the right processes. Or maybe, that just doesn't work without restarting the phone.
Or would you (or anyone)know which processes one has to kill?
You know, I even REMOVED harversterserver.exe from C:/ once. All that didn't help thus far...
But I am open to new suggestions, of course. And I'll look into the texts you suggested! ;)

Update: I pulled out the microSD-Card and switched the phone back on. But the big thumbnail files keep their humongeous sizes... :'(
Please someone, what can I do to erase theses files: C:/private/10281E17/[102830AB]thumbnail_v4.db (5.5 MB) and C:/private/10281E17/[102830AB]thumbnail_v4.db-wal (a stupefying 32.8 MB)? If they recreate themselves 1:1, fine. But I suspect they would end up much smaller.
Which processes do I have to kill? And what is the best app to do that?

Well deleting the .exe from C:\ seems pointless, as it's on Z:\, too, and will revert there if it has to.
i killed HarvesterServer.exe (0x102830AB) and deleted the files C:/private/10281E17/[102830AB]thumbnail_v4.db + .journal and they were re-created within minutes (!) at 1/10th their original sizes.
Apparently, HarvesterServer automatically restarts if killed so this must be done swiftly.
As far as the task manager i use, it's JbakTaskMan.

I couldn't kill HarvesterServer.exe at first. Now it is dead and stays there. (Well, maybe it restarts immediately, anyway. And my program "KillMe" just doesn't immediately notice...) The files I'm trying to get rid of still won't let themselves be deleted. Besides, the files on my 700 seem to be different, because there is none with the ending .journal. One is C:/private/10281E17/[102830AB]thumbnail_v4.db all right. And the other, bigger one, is C:/private/10281E17/[102830AB]thumbnail_v4.db-wal.
Wot hath gone rot? :O

Killing it permanently would really slow the gallery down though, if it has to create the database over and over.

Thanks for your reply! I just want to kill the process once, because if I delete the two big files I'm sure their re-created versions will be much smaller.
So do you, does anyone, know how to delete these files?

Try using a different task manager. JbakTaskMan and BestTaskMan are both quality tools.

I did it!!!
I changed the name of the folder the two huge files were in. The process binding them couldn't get to them any more. I deleted them. Then I changed the name of their folder back.
I have almost 100 MB back on C:\!!!
Now let's see, how big these files will be when they'll get rebuilt...
What I take away: I know how to get rid of them. :P

Just as a follow-up: I still have 96 MB on C:\. OK. I haven't, yet, used the Gallery again. But I doubt it will create 40 MB of thumbnails once I do... ;D

Why you want so many free C memory? ??? it's not that more free memory will give you better performance. When it comes to better performance, it is affected by the cpu clock speed, gpu and RAM which both cannot be increase.

Now my memory melted to 89 MB. But it's still about 30 MB more than what I had when the huge thumbnail-files were still present.
@symster: I had 120 MB on C:\. And before I found a way to erase those weirdly huge thumbnail-files, I was down to 60 MB. Sometimes I'm away from home and my cellphone receives my emails. Sometimes a friend of mine, who just LOVES to send me humongeous Powerpoint-presentations, sends me three or four in a row. And within a day or two, my email uses up 25 or 40 MB on C:\. So there actually ARE possible situations when a cluttered C:\-drive would compromise normal functions on my phone. ;)

i like C:\ to be as available as possible, too. C:\ is your pocket and E:\/F:\ is your bank account ::)

??? with money you have purchasing power but what did more C memory do. I don't use email as I usually use web version. My C memory have been stagnant for many months around 50-60 since the last time I do major clean up. It is my mass memory that have the most fluctuations. I guess each users have its own preferences like email users need to have spare memory.

When C:\ is required, there is very little you can do to convince the system otherwise - making free space on C:\ a very precious commodity.
Literally, too, as mass memory content outweighs C:\ to the tune of 5500% on the N8 and 2000% on the E6...
Memory card outweighs it by 11000% on the N8 8000% on the E6.
So, C:\ is indeed an asset to be cultivated and cared for accordingly.
In my opinion, anyhow.

Time to use "Delight"? I'm seriously thinking about it. But I have over 93 MB left on C:\ now. The phone is hacked. I can access its deepest recesses. I'm happy with what I got. 8) But if there is something eating phone memory again, I might consider switching to a CFW.
To be honest: I worry more about my C5-03. Its internal memory is chronically so low that I can't use "Maps" any more. But since I have my 700 for that, I don't bother infusing it with slimmer firmware. :P
