N8 - OTG USB Webcam Support (request)
« on: August 24, 2013, 03:12:05 am »
Good Day since this is my first post in This forum and I hope that i post this in right section.

One day i Get as birthday gift the Canyon CNR-FWC120FH HD Webcam
Snice i do bike downhill events and i am not person that preffer device for 1 Use like
GoPro or Panasonic HX-A100E-K.

So I have N8 and that has ability the USB-OTG. I am using it very well, but if i Plug this webcam,
Phone (after a while) says "Unsupported device".

I know that this is just Software/Firmware Issue because N8 recognise the device but it has no driver for it and application that handle it.
And I read that Symbian OS is Open-Soruce.

And i see that this feature is able on Android OS
"USB Camera Android Viewer & Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920"
but i really want to see it on Symbian/belle and in mighty N8..

I post this Idea on many Forums but No response (even for Money)
I am symbian user after i got my first S-phone (6120c) and i really don't want to migrate to other OS

So I hope that this is the right forum and please is Here someone that can do this...

Symbian has not being open source for two years, the USB OTG API is no longer documented, and I believe Nokia changed something to do with it in the Belle update.

Yes Many people tells me to throw my N8 to dumper, but I still Use it and I Like it.
Bad is not everybody feels that way...
I know Symbian IS OLD or even Obsolete, but everyone know that Ancient OS is Windows, Linux but even IOS but we still have it...
And i Believe that Sources IS somewhere available even with documentation.
(I always count with that, There is always user/s that has this saved on their HDD)

And I know that Nokia is not that type of manufacturer, that will Update their devices with new features...
But only AS NEW PRODUCT!

Allstar12345
I see you own "The Last flagship" (808) Can you please test some webcam with your 808?
but i dont think it will work...

Only If someone Edit/make custom Firmware and create application for handle it...

And at Last... many forums i posted this topic is dead or reply me "NOT DOABLE"
But i know it is "DOABLE"

The old source is still available on the net, but so much has changed since Symbian^3.

I'm afraid I haven't got a webcam myself but the USB OTG drivers will all be the same.

Though drivers are deeper than what we can actually access

Allstar12345 first thanks for reply

I am not developer... I Wish I could...
I am just fan, able to make some hacking with hex+rompatcher or write simple applications via PyS60.

Thats why i post this topic on forums like this where i can find someone that has skills for it...
I even contact user good in this "CODERUS" from underground community.
But he reply me in e-mail, that it is difficult for one-man or too late...
Since i contact him, after the Nokia kills Symbian...

And post this on Nokia official forum it will be (waste of time) same like on the other forums i post
Or they will reply me:
"Symbian support ends" or "Obsolete"

I found on the CODERUS web some links, maybe be useful:
http://www.symlab.org/main/documentation/reference/s3/pdk/GUID-C22974D8-CFB9-4A83-BE58-CCC97EA8DF13.html

I was offering an pay/request on one forum. = no reply
I am still willing to pay for the feature... "if it will work"

Hi again.
Since my last post i got my hands on Nokia 808 PW FP2 and tested the webcam i have (Cannon CNR-FWC120FH) but still phone shows "unsupported device"
I have found video that precisely describe what can be handy in this S^3 enviroment.

My application for this is: Mounted webcam on helmet and usb cable from it connected to my N8 or 808 during Bike downhill event recording video od device at least 480p or 720p if possible. (on 808 with 1.3ghz cpu surely)
My brother have old Gopro H2 cam since his last trip he broke the camera...
And with feature like this will be no worry for breaking the webcam while in action because still got the video in device (N8 or 808).

So please anyone here can make this...

I honestly don't think there is anyone with the expertise left to do this sort of thing, I know for fact I wouldn't get my head around that.

The problem with the basic concept here is already a bit shaky (pun intended).
A standard webcam is not designed for the pounding it is going to take in a downhill race. The camera will probably stop working pretty quickly under those stresses. GoPro cameras are designed for it and a variety of cases are designed to spare them so much damage in an impact.
GoPros have even been launched into the upper atmosphere!
The goal should be not crashing, anyhow, so think of the camera as the incentive to stay on your bike :D

Yes you are right matthew.  ;)
But that was a mine example of use.
As for GoPro...
Yes it is designed for survival but for me is too expensive as device for 1 purpose.

And I try the bike mount for my N8 but after i fell off it (because i fail doing some trick for friends)
After the bike smashed to concrete floor the phone fell off the mount (I don't know how??) and you all here know what happend...
The result:

I must change whole chassis + upper and bottom cover.
And video file was shaky/useless because my bike does not have suspension on front wheel.

Then I try First Person view video - N8 attached to helmet. The video was great but honestly having your phone attached to your forehead on helmet is not safe for me and and for the device (not waterproof, etc)

But having someting like this:

or

attached inside or outside of helmet "like camera helmet" and usb cable goes safely to phone. there is no worry if i fell off or broke the camera i will have the phone in pocket recording...

There are many applications for this feature as you always carry your phone in your pocket.
Another example:
"Car DVR" with phone main back cam as car front cam and rear via usb webcam.
+ N8 and 808 have Tv out, so even able to see the picture on larger screen that is mounted in car.

Please dont see it so Black and white... There must be still someone that is able to do it.
"If this phones have unloked boot-loader" and can run custom android at least 4.0 ver i will migrate...
But all we here know that is way more "not possible" as this S^3 driver/app issue.
Create whole custom android Rom designed for Symbian hardware running native.
That's Impossible

I like this Symbian enviroment its so unique and i have no problems with it
And "I Want to S^3 Continue"

The problem is there is no-one left who can do this, writing drivers to a closed source os would be a nightmare.

I don't know a single 3rd party written driver except the ROMPatcher drivers by ZoRn/Il.Socio/iCODeRUS and they are "easy", writing a hardware driver for Symbian is something completly diffrent and not an easy task.

You can read Symbian OS Internals, ARM System developers guide, study Symbian^3 PDK and Symbian^3 sources and try to understand them all, implementing the driver itself is something else.
You also need advanced documentation about the hardware, how it communicates etc.
