Is there a good browser?
« on: January 29, 2013, 06:08:25 pm »
I got an 808 but I cannot force Desktop mode on Opera or the stock browser, I want to trick BBCiplayer into thinking it is a PC browser so I can view the desktop site. However I can never seem to get flash player to work with any website, I always get that I need to upgrade...

Thanx.

try opera mobile: opera button, settings, advanced, user agent.
Or you can use a UA mod for default browser.

Hmm even if you get a desktop site on the stock browser, flash doesn't work.......

Why even have it installed?

Are they ever gonna update it to a proper version of flash?

My god this phone has the worst browser I've ever used, it some how manages to be slower than an E51 I used awhile back. I thought the specs are around the iPhone 4 side of things, should be around the same........ no. The stock browser crashes all the time, takes like 2 mins to load pages and Flash doesn't even work, even though it is meant to be installed.

Opera works slightly better but oh look, Iplayer doesn't work with it, ITV player and 4OD don't work with either browser. There isn't any apps on the store for these either so you really rely on the browsers to do the job.

The core phone is ok, it lacks pretty much every app out there but the browser being this broken is unacceptable.

I'm going to have to get a refund, how do Nokia even get away with releasing it this broken?

The browser isn't broken...
Symbian does not have flash support, it has Flash lite..

And frankly BBC iplayer desktop site doesn't work fine on any phone.. others just have apps..
I had to trick my 5530 into thinking it was a 5800 a few years back to get bbc iplayer to open.

It has Apps.. you need to actually look.

bbc iplayer worked fine on my Galaxy S2 using flash, flawlessly without any lag using the Desktop site :\ The app works fine on my friends iPhone 4, the problem is Symbian doesn't have an app, it has the mobile site but that is only the default browser, which is the worst performing thing I've ever used. There is no ITV player app or 4oD and there is no good Youtube app.

Nothing uses Flash Lite, I don't understand why it is even advertised, like NOTHING is compatible. So you cannot watch any online videos with Symbian unless you want to struggle with a crap Youtube app or like struggling with a non functioning stock browser that allows the BBCiPlayer site. Sadly lots of other sites I want to view do not go to the mobile site, they just say the device isn't supported... I thought the phone supports HTML5? Surely that is universal?

I just don't understand what Nokia are doing, you'd expect them to go to these main websites and work with them to get an app or work with Adobe to get flash support so you don't need them.

Flash for mobiles has being discontinued anyway...
And look at the s2.. Compare its hardware to this phones..

1.2ghz dual vs 1.3 single ARM11

on YouTube apps.. There are loads.. Whats  the issue ?

Yes it has HTML on the browser..
Device not supported messages are the webmasters not adding the device..

You might not know but the 808 is the last symbian phone and fp2 is the last major update

I'm refunding it anyways, no wonder Nokia are doing so badly when they're releasing a phone like this in 2012.

I used to own an iPhone 3G with specs much less than this phone and it didn't perform anywhere near as badly. I mean Opera performs kinda ok, it's still a bit slow but this phones is bottle necked by the software, not the hardware. When you'e waiting like 2 mins for a page to load, it's constantly flashing, refreshing, resizing and crashing, it's embarrassing for whoever coded this browser.

What I'm really surprised at as well is no one is even bothering to port Android or Windows Phone to these Nokia devices like they do for Android or IOS devices... like no one cares. All I've experienced is a dead OS with no support, Nokia don't care even though they've just released it and I just don't get how they could hire so many people and fail so hard.

The phone is nice, feels nice and solid and despite the screen resolution it looks great and Symbian feels pretty much just like Android. Sadly however it's like being in a ghost town when it comes to apps and the browser is pathetic.
