Title: Any tweaks for system to consume less RAM (more ram for web browsers)?
Post by: Jusko on September 29, 2014, 11:09:40 pm
Hello :)

Well... i have Nokia C6 and i really like this phone (full qwerty and Symbian - 10/10 for me).

The problem is, that C6 have 128MB RAM as far as i know, so there is one problem - not enough memory for web browsers - both system browser and Opera Mobile.

Sure - Opera Mini is some solution but sometimes i need live running JavaScript scripts, so static websites provided by Opera Mini are not always full solution. System browser and Opera Mobile have one problem - out of memory error on almost every website.

RAMBlow can clean-up memory and with good boosting there is ~57.88MB of free RAM, but still not enough :'(

Second way to solve this problem is to give up and understanding that there is nothing i can do - RAM is not enough - outdated phone, end of story :(

But - there are maybe some tricks or tweaks for Symbian S60v5 to consume less RAM so more memory can be to transfer for web browsers?

Best Regards  :)

There are ways to free up RAM, like editing your firmware to knock apps out of the start-up and by using a task manager to kill unwanted processes after boot.

Hello.

Thank You for reply and sorry for delay... :(

Well - I've read some tutorials but they based on killing background apps or using applications like Ram Blow. Well - I'm using both method's.

I know that 128MB RAM is not much, it's almost impossible to using web browsers on PC with that amount of memory. Symbian takes ~60MB RAM - not much, but maybe it can be more compact?

But still - i didn't found any tutorials about editing firmware or which process i can kill to free some MB's of RAM  :(

Well - maybe this fight is without sense because even if Symbian can be more slim, how much memory can be freed up? Few MB's at least? It's just hard to browse internet from something else than Opera Mini - error's about out of memory  >:D

How much RAM do you see after booting (and which app are you using to gauge it? Every app seems to have a different system of measurement and vary by several MB).
After a full reboot, i see 51MB of free RAM on the E72, which also has 128MB RAM. This is up from 40MB on stock firmware, so editing your starter lists can definitely yield memory.

Finally my C6 return from repair - broken microphone, it's a common issue in this model from what i've heard.

After boot, RAMblow shows ~54MB free memory. Cleaning up after fresh boot can free up memory to 61.44MB RAM.

I've read "Modding Starter Files" - maybe with trials & errors i can do that without crashing phone firmware ;) Last time i've modded Siemens firmware's, but it was gosh - 10 years ago maybe? :D

Thank You - i will read tutorial once again, but i don't know if i can workaround out-of-memory error in browsers other than Opera Mini :-[

That one requires increasing the app's max heap size. i believe you can do it using CODeRUS' EPOCID app for PC (alongside SISContents by Aquarius), but i might be wrong.
